Formative blog feedback - Miss Hunter

Ron, your blog is on track.

So far:

WWW: You are working diligently and you understand the conventions of a magazine. I can see that you have applied them in the preliminary task to good effect. Well done.

EBI: Try to work faster to catch up with the best students in the class. You can do very well in this coursework, but you need to push yourself to start the next task and avoid wasting lesson time.

Next steps:

  • Case study of a magazine of your choice - front cover analysis, contents page analysis, double page spread analysis, colour (throughout the magazine) analysis.
Keep up the good effort.

Analysis of Magazine language

Q magazine

Q magazine has a target audience of adults interested in music. For example, the magazine uses intelligent, descriptive language throughout. “The same charming lack of guile runs through … the band’s debut”. The word “guile” is sophisticated and assumes that the reader understands this level of vocabulary easily. This suggests that the audience is well educated about this type of music.

Also, it seems that it is written for very passionate music fans. For example, on an article about the singer ‘Miguel’, the magazine uses passionate language such as “I FUCKING LOVE YOU, MIGUEL!” The words ‘fucking’ and ‘love’ show how passionate the audience is about the singer.

Q magazine also has a target audience of people who are interested in musician’s lives before fame. An article about ‘Krept & Konan’ goes from “Wilson’s (Konan) stepfather Ned tried to force the intruder…..was shot dead on the stairs” to “When we walk through Thornton Heath, the cars beep, everyone gives love”. The article uses a lot of emotive language to get the story across to the audience. Words such as ‘shot’ and ‘love’ show pain and make the reader feel a type of way.
