Editors Letter Analysis

Easy Living – editor’s letter (September 2012)

The Easy Living Magazine is set out and targeted to middle aged women between the ages 30-55. The magazine includes a lot of factors which will attract a wide ranged audience. The editor of the magazine presents herself and starts off with a ‘welcome’ in big bold letters which makes it stand out at the top of the page and attracts the reader into wanting to read more. The fact that the editor uses an exclamation mark also gives it a more joyful tone and gives the reader a warmer welcome. Also, Deborah quotes that she is 37 which is better as she is trying to reach out to women the same sort of age.

Throughout the letter you notice that the word ‘your’ has been used quite frequently. This makes the note feel more personal to the reader as they feel more involved in it. The editor has used the technique where she forms a relationship with the reader to make them feel more special. By doing this, the reader chooses to carry on reading as they feel very involved.

Another way of interacting with her audience is by asking rhetorical questions. This makes the readers reflect and answer the question in their heads. This is a very good technique to engage the readers into the text.
